Parent SKU (configurable product)

Definition

A parent SKU groups the variants of the same product. It is not sold on its own: it holds the shared information and lets the buyer choose the size, color or version.

Many commerce platforms call it a configurable product. The variants (the child SKUs) point to it and only store what makes them different.

When a channel receives the catalog, it needs to know which SKU is the parent, which are its children and which axes set them apart. That is why the relationship is part of the product record and not a store detail.
