Attribute family

Definition

A family groups the attributes that apply to a type of product. A drill and a shirt don't need the same data: the family says which attributes belong to each and which are required.

With families, completeness is measured against what actually applies: a shirt is not missing “power”. Without them, every product looks incomplete or asks for too much.

In a PIM, the family is usually assigned by product type or inherited from the category. It is what lets one catalog hold tools, clothing and electronics without mixing their data.

  • Product taxonomy

A taxonomy is the category tree used to organize a catalog, from the most general level to the most specific: for example, Tools › Power tools › Drills.

  • Product completeness

Completeness measures how much of the information a product needs has already been captured: its family's attributes, its content, its images and what each channel requires.
