Alt text

Definition

Alt text (the alt attribute) describes an image in words: screen readers read it to people who cannot see it, and search engines use it to understand what the image is about.

On a product page, good alt text says what is shown: the product, its color, the angle or the use. Google uses it, together with the page content, to understand the image.

Writing it by hand for thousands of photos rarely happens. In Bruxel product images get alt text written by AI, as the images guide shows.
