Variants
How to group sizes and colors under a parent product, and what your catalog gains from it.
Video transcript
In this video, you'll group a T-shirt's sizes under their parent product.
Each size is a product with its own SKU, and they all hang from a parent product.
When you import, the parent_sku column says who each one's parent is.
Three variants, already hanging from the T-shirt.
The parent's record shows its variants.
The axes say what tells them apart, like size or color: only select or yes/no attributes, up to four.
And if the parent's record is already published, each child uses it as a reference when it's generated: they all sound alike.
In the next video, you'll link products that are offered together.
Parent and children
When the same product is sold in several sizes or colors, each variant is a product with its own SKU, and all of them hang off a parent product that represents them.
How they are linked
On import, add a parent_sku column with the parent's SKU. You can also link them later from the product page. A product cannot be its own parent.
Axes
Axes are the attributes that TELL the children apart: size, color, capacity. They are declared on the parent.
- Only list or Yes/No attributes: they are the only ones with comparable values.
- Up to four axes per parent.
What children inherit
If the parent is already generated, generating a child passes the parent's description along as a reference. That way every size sounds alike instead of like nine different texts.
